At Lili Warrior, our cotton is 100% organic!
Whenever you see cotton fabric in our accessories or clothing — like our LiliWarrior Woman Organic Cotton Tote or our CRUX Bamboo & Organic Cotton Tank Top — it’s always organic!
From seed to flower harvest, organic cotton is grown without pesticides, insecticides or chemical fertilizers, and without GMOs. Instead, producers use natural fertilizers and insecticides, which do not harm the surrounding ecosystems, do not deplete the soil, and are not toxic to the workers on the production line. Organic cotton also saves water compared to conventional cotton.
Today, only a tiny fraction of the world’s cotton production is certified organic. In fact, organic cotton represents about 2 million tonnes sold per year, compared to over 17 billion tonnes of conventional cotton.
Why does growing organic cotton consume less water than conventional cotton?
It takes 2,500 liters of water to make a standard cotton t-shirt — the equivalent of 70 showers! Whilst we don’t have the exact corresponding figure for an organic cotton tee, we do know that its cultivation is less water-intensive, for a few reasons:
- Organic soils retain water and moisture better because they contain more organic matter. The cotton plant therefore requires less outside irrigation to meet its water needs.
- Hazardous synthetic pesticides and fertilizers are banned in organic farming, which means rivers, lakes and drinking water are kept cleaner too…thus saving water for the long term!
- The toxins and chemical products used to grow conventional cotton require extra water for dilution, which is not the case for organic.
Whilst the water requirements for growing cotton itself don’t vary drastically between organic and conventional cotton; the methods that surround organic farming definitely save water, and that’s plenty good reason for us to go organic!
In short, our cotton clothing & accessories are always made with our beautiful planet—and people—in mind.
